When and why put on a postpartum girdle?

Gaine post partum

After the birth of a baby, many physical changes occur in the mother.

One of the major concerns for many women is returning to their pre-pregnancy silhouette. This is where the implementation of a postpartum girdle comes into play. But when is it really wise to use it and what are its real benefits? Here are some answers we have for you.

Why use a postpartum girdle?

Wearing an abdominal shaper after childbirth has several advantages. First of all, it allows you to gradually reshape and refine your waistline as well as firm your stomach thanks to the compression exerted on this area.

Postpartum product from the same range as our belt or shaping panties, this accessory is generally made of an elastic fabric that attaches around the waist and /or hips.

The use of a postpartum girdle can also help with back support. Indeed, we know that during pregnancy, the spine curves more in order to support the additional weight of the belly. This modification has the consequence of weakening the back and lumbar muscles. Worn correctly, a girdle can relieve these muscular tensions by promoting good posture.

When to start wearing a postpartum girdle?

It is essential to give your body time to recover from childbirth before considering using an abdominal binder. Every woman is different, and the recovery period also varies from person to person. From the 1st day after childbirth, it is generally possible to start wearing a postpartum binder. However, it is crucial to seek the advice of your doctor or midwife to ensure that it does not compromise your health.

To take into account: the different types of deliveries

Depending on the type of delivery, the right time to put on a girdle may differ:

  • Vaginal delivery without complications: it will be possible to put on an abdominal sheath from the first day after delivery;
  • Vaginal delivery with episiotomy or tearing: it is better to wait for partial healing in the case of wounds (i.e. 5 days);
  • Caesarean section: We recommend at least 5 days, for the wound to heal a minimum. Our belt is suitable for cesarean section because it exerts pressure which can relieve pain. If you experience any discomfort, please consult your doctor.

Precautions to take when wearing a postpartum girdle

If you decide to use an abdominal girdle after giving birth, here are some precautions to take to get the best benefits without putting your health at risk:

  • Opt for a quality sheath adapted to your body shape: at Sweet Birth it is important that the girdle is comfortable and does not tighten you too much, as this could be counterproductive.
  • Don't forget to exercise and eat a balanced diet: wearing a girdle should not be a miracle solution. The ideal is to combine it with a gradual resumption of physical activity and a dietary rebalancing in order to optimize its effects.
  • Do not wear an abdominal girdle for too long: at Sweet Birth we recommend only wearing the sheath for only a few hours a day (4 to 6 hours) and remove it before sleeping, in order to allow the abdominal muscles to return to their place naturally and not to cause excessive tension on the body.

A postpartum girdle (different from the Sweet Birth belt) is effective when used correctly and in moderation. It is important to pay attention to your body's signals and to respect the stages of recovery after childbirth. Do not hesitate to seek advice from your healthcare professional before starting to use this accessory to ensure that you are making the best choice for your body.
